THE ZUZU SECRET, told in alternating points of view, is about Josie, a 12-year-old aspiring veterinarian, and Abe, her 15-year-old baseball-loving brother born with a rare disease called Prader-Willi syndrome, as they learn the risks of keeping secrets and the value of family while staying true to their dreams.

Dorothea Lantz, Director of Community Engagement for PWSA, USA

“THE ZUZU SECRET gave voice to my son who was born with Prader-Willi syndrome and is non-verbal. This incredibly emotional story allowed me to look at PWS through his lens, like taking a journey through his mind as he learns to cope with the challenges of this devastating disease.”

“This story really moved me. Chernick captures the emotional rollercoaster that is childhood with poignancy, pathos, and warmth. THE ZUZU SECRET is a great read for both kids and adults.”

Kids’ reviews of The Zuzu Secret

  • THE ZUZU SECRET is a beautiful book about the struggle and responsibility it is to have a brother with Prader-Willi syndrome. The book shows how hard it is trying to go out into the world and find your purpose while trying to cater to your sibling. That was great. The pacing was just right for the book’s style, the wording was on point, but most importantly the book depicts kids with Prader-Willi syndrome perfectly.

    Michael, age 14

  • I think the book was very good and realistic. I felt that my brother behaves a lot worse than Abe, but it was realistic how Abe was always talking about lunch or dinner. I am happy that people will be able to understand the sibling point of view of a normal day with someone that has Prader-Willi syndrome.

    Christian, age 13

  • I loved this book so much. I felt that I was connected to Josie because when I grow up I want to be a vet. I also volunteered at my local animal shelter this past year. Whenever something bad happened to Josie or Abe I felt sadness with them.
